The international forum focuses on the role of the urban environment, education and children’s participation
What does a city look like through the eyes of a child? And how can cities create environments where children do not simply grow up, but actively participate? These questions are at the heart of City of Children 2026, an international forum taking place in Sofia on 25 and 26 September, bringing together representatives of European cities, educational institutions, universities, experts and professionals in early childhood development and education.
The event is organised by the Kaleidoscope Foundation, together with Sofia Municipality and Meetings Sofia, in partnership with the Faculty of Education at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. International speakers and representatives from Italy, Sweden, Germany, Malta, Estonia and Spain are sharing different approaches and good practices in early childhood development, education and the creation of child-friendly urban environments.
The first day, 25 September, is dedicated to “Cities in Dialogue: European Models for Early Childhood Development, Learning and Participation”. Discussions and presentations explore European models and practices related to early childhood development, educational services and the active participation of children in their communities.
On 26 September, the focus shifts to Reggio Emilia and the theme “Education for Change”. Developed in the Italian city after the Second World War, the Reggio Emilia approach views children as citizens from an early age, teachers as researchers, parents as partners, and the environment as an active part of the learning process. At its core is the belief that curiosity, participation and asking questions are essential to learning and development.
Opportunities for International Guests to Discover Sofia
As a partner of City of Children 2026, Meetings Sofia is also highlighting the Bulgarian capital to international participants and encouraging them to discover the city beyond the forum itself.
Through information and branded materials, as well as opportunities for visits and experiences, guests can explore different sides of Sofia – its cultural heritage, urban environment and contemporary character. The materials also include the new Sofia with Kids Map, designed to guide young explorers and their families to interesting places and experiences across the city.
Supporting the forum is part of Meetings Sofia’s efforts to strengthen Sofia’s position as an international events destination and to use international forums as an opportunity to introduce the city to new audiences.
City of Children 2026 creates a platform for the international exchange of experience and good practices while raising an important question for modern cities: how can we create environments that meet the needs of children and families today, and what can we change to make our cities better places for them?
