The University Botanical Gardens at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" include three gardens located in three cities - Sofia, Varna and Balchik.
The University Botanical Garden - Sofia was established in 1892 by the first Bulgarian professor of botany, Dr. Stefan Georgiev.
At the opening of the Botanical Garden, an oak (Quercus robur L.) was planted, in the roots of which Tsar Ferdinand I placed a golden coin.
Today, the oak with its mighty trunk and crown provides cool shade, reminiscent of the spacious oak groves that once covered the Sofia Field.
