Church of St Petka

Visit

The Church of St Petka the Old in Sofia is an ancient Orthodox church dedicated to St Paraskeva (Petka) of Epivat, who lived in the 11th century. An inscription above the southern entrance shows the church was rebuilt or renovated in 1241 on older foundations, connected to the transfer of her relics to Tarnovo. It is a small, single-nave building partly set into the ground and among Sofia’s oldest Christian sites. Earliest written records date from the 16th century, and the interior holds old icons and frescoes.
