Gorna Banya Monastery of St Cyril and Methodius

Gornobanski Monastery of Saints Cyril and Methodius lies on the slopes of Vitosha Mountain near Sofia. Founded in the Middle Ages, it was repeatedly destroyed during Ottoman rule. Rebuilt in the nineteenth century, the monastery became an important spiritual and educational center connected with the Bulgarian National Revival and cultural heritage. It remains an active monastery of the Orthodox Church.
