National Gallery – The Palace

Visit

The Palace was built immediately after the Liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule, 1878, and the election of Sofia as the capital, 1879. The first Bulgarian prince Alexander I Battenberg, 1879-1886, commissioned the Viennese architect Viktor Rumpelmeyer, 1830-1885, to rebuild the former Turkish konak. On December 26, 1882, the Palace was officially opened. After September 9, 1944, this most representative building in the capital became the seat of the Council of Ministers. In 1953, the state provided the former Palace to the National Art Gallery and the National Ethnographic Museum.
