The Church of St. Sophia in Sofia is an Early Christian basilica from the 6th century, built during the reign of Emperor Justinian I (527–565). Beneath it lie remains of earlier churches from the 4th–5th centuries and an ancient necropolis.
In the Middle Ages, the church gave its name to the city—Sofia—adopted in the 14th century.
After the Ottoman conquest it was converted into a mosque, but following earthquakes in 1818 it was abandoned.
The church was restored as an Orthodox храм in the 20th–21st centuries.
