Sofia is enormously rich in mineral springs, which are located even in the city center, near some of its most emblematic buildings. One of these buildings is the building of the Central Mineral Bath, which today houses the Museum of the History of Sofia. The construction of the Bath began in 1889 under the leadership of the Austrian architect Emil von Förster, who won an international competition for a mineral bath with a hotel. Due to a lack of funds, the process was stopped, but the venture was lucky and the small bath opened its doors in 1908, thanks to the architect Petko Momchilov and Friedrich Grünanger. The large bath - with two swimming pools, family baths and Roman baths was opened on May 13, 1913. Soon, a hydrotherapy institute with water fountains was opened in the northern wing, which were supplied with water from the mineral springs flowing under the building.
