St. George the Victor Rotunda

VisitShare

The Rotunda Church of St. George is the oldest architectural monument in Sofia and the only building in the city preserved up to its roof that dates back to the Roman Empire.

From the very beginning, the building had a religious function, most likely as a martyrium.

The construction of the Rotunda dates to the early 4th century, during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great (306–337), who stayed in Serdica on numerous occasions.

He is credited with the famous phrase, “Serdica is my Rome.”
