The Royal Palace

Visit

The Royal Palace in Sofia, Bulgaria, was built at the end of the 19th century after the country's independence was declared in 1878 and served as the main residence, administrative building, and center of power for the Bulgarian monarchs of the Third Bulgarian Kingdom (nominally a principality until 1908). The overall architectural silhouette of the Palace is eclectic in nature, combining the dynamism of Viennese Neo-Baroque with the calm Renaissance elements in both the decoration and the overall composition. The park surrounding the Palace was a key element of the architectural ensemble. Its appearance was enriched with plant species, decorative lighting, and colorful floral compositions. Combining Austrian Neo-Baroque and French Rococo styles, it witnessed the country's transition from a monarchy to a socialist republic. On January 30, 1894, Tsar Boris III was born in the Royal Palace. Since 1953, it has housed the National Gallery in the northwest and the Ethnographic Museum in the southeastern part.
