Catholic Church of St Francis of Assisi

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sofia was founded in 1899 as part of the Carmelite friars’ monastery.

In 1940, Carmelite sisters settled around it, and in 1952 they faced persecution during anti-Catholic oppression.

Today the church remains active, serving Catholic liturgies in the Byzantine-Slav tradition under the care of the Carmelite friars, preserving its historical presence in Bulgaria’s capital.
