The Church of St. Sedmochislenitsi in Sofia is an emblematic Orthodox church, converted in 1901-1903 from an Ottoman mosque (the Black Mosque, 1528), work of Mimar Sinan. It was built on the foundations of an old Christian temple (5th-6th centuries) and a sanctuary of Asclepius.
The architecture combines Ottoman construction with the addition of a dome, a bell tower and an iconostasis, made by craftsmen from Debar.
It was inaugurated on 27 July 1903, the day of commemoration of St. St. Kiril and Metodii and their disciples. Today It is one of the key historical monuments in Sofia, combining a complex religious and cultural history.
