On 14 January 2026, Sofia will celebrate 125 years of tram transport with a special programme featuring free rides on historic trams through the city centre.
Throughout the day, beautifully preserved trams from different eras will return to the streets, offering visitors a unique opportunity to experience the evolution of Sofia's public transport. Several historic tramcars will also be displayed at Vazrazhdane Square, where visitors can explore their interiors, learn about their history and take photographs.
As part of the celebrations, Visit Sofia will distribute commemorative vintage-style tickets and a specially produced heritage newspaper dedicated to the 125-year history of Sofia's tram network. These souvenirs will be available both aboard the historic trams and at the Tram 83 Tourist Information Centre.
Heritage Tram Route
The historic trams will operate along the following circular route:
Vazrazhdane Square – Hristo Botev Boulevard – Alabin Street – Vitosha Boulevard – Knyaginya Maria Luiza Boulevard – Hristo Botev Boulevard – Vazrazhdane Square
Services will depart every 30 minutes between 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., with both the starting and finishing point at Vazrazhdane Square.
Among the participating vehicles is the fully restored Tram No. 701, an iconic model from the 1980s returning to service especially for the anniversary. It will be joined by several other historic tramcars, illustrating the development of Sofia's tram network over the past 125 years.
All rides are free of charge and no advance registration is required.
The celebration is part of the city's official programme marking 125 years of tram transport in Sofia, bringing the history of public transport to life where it belongs—on the streets of the Bulgarian capital, where trams have been an integral part of everyday life for more than a century.
