Sofia Lights Up for Christmas: Visit Sofia Decorates Iconic City Locations

Sofia is shining with festive spirit this Christmas. This year, Visit Sofia has brought holiday cheer to residents and visitors by decorating three iconic locations in the Bulgarian capital – the Tram 83 Tourist Information Centre, the Chitalnyata information point in the City Garden and the historic Vishneva tram stop. Only natural materials have been used for the decorations.

The main highlight of this year's festive initiative is the Vishneva tram stop – a small but iconic place in the heart of Sofia that has been decorated with Christmas lights for the first time. Surrounded by the rhythm of the city and the sound of passing trams, Vishneva is a reminder that Sofia is full of unique places, each with its own charm and fascinating history.

The stop is one of Sofia's most romantic and recognisable landmarks. Several legends surround its origins, including stories that it was built as a hunting lodge for Tsar Boris III and given to him by his wife, or that it once served as a meeting place for secret encounters.

The most likely historical explanation, however, connects its construction with the extension of Sofia's tram network during the 1930s, following requests from residents of the Lozenets neighbourhood. The new tram route was officially opened on 3 December 1933 by Sofia's then mayor, Haralampi Oroschakoff.

By decorating these distinctive tourism locations, Visit Sofia aims to highlight the charm of the Bulgarian capital and create a warm, authentic and inspiring atmosphere for everyone choosing to experience the city during the festive season.

Share Christmas in Sofia – vibrant, beautiful and festive. Just as we create it together!
